Todays Beaver

For todays Beaver Blog Bonanza post I hit the net and searched out some modern day Beaver Ad Mascots. They sure lack the style of their older retired mammal ad buddies (with the exception of the Busy Beaver Buttons Beaver middle left). I guess they sure don't make them like they used to, including Beavers. One last day to go on the Beaver Blog Bonanza Week so drop by Friday for our last day of posts.

Boozy Beaver

Howdy Folks and welcome to Beaver Blog Bonanza Day 3. What better way for a busy beaver to quench his thirst than a nice glass of Petri Wine. I guess when your nawing a tree to a toothpick you need a little pick me up at the end of the day. He must be quite a lightweight to be leaning on that tree without knocking it down. It also looks to me like he has sort of a beer belly from all his drinking. Thanks for dropping by and don't forget to check out Dans blog mistertoast for his Beaver post of the day.

Builder Beaver

Todays Beaver is quite the Builder Beaver. This guy was the mascot for the Builders Emporium Hardware stores. Back before the Home Depots and Lowes there were many smaller hardware stores around and Builders Emporium was one of them. This was the cover of a lawn sprinkler guide handout from the store. They use the beaver and also his family in all the advertising back then and also some of the stores own product packaging. Thanks for dropping by see you all tomorrow.

Bobbie Petty

Vintage Petty artwork made these Bobbie Pins more than run of the mill pins. Check out the name"Scoldy Lox", I wonder what meaning they were trying to convey? Monday is the start of Tikiranch and Mister Toasts week long Beaver Blog Bonanza so stay tuned all next week.

Coupons Please

Clipping coupons has been happening for quite some time. Sometimes that collection of coupons gets stashed and is forgotten in a drawer or cupboard for years. These are a few scans of some of the products in a whole bag full of vintage coupons I picked up last weekend. With just this little piece of paper discounts we there for Fluffo, Glim, Dash, Hep, Lux, Ad , Praise, Joy and Fab. Simple and straight product names back then wouldn't you say? "Hey Honey don't forget the Fluffo, oh and pick up a few bars of Praise while your out will ya!" Thanks for dropping by.

Big Mac Daddy

Wow I finally was able to get this post up. So sorry you all but the Blogger was not blogging for me the past few days. So here he is The Big Mac Cop statue from one of the retired McDonalds Playlands. At 6 feet tall and needing a little paint ( OK a lot of paint) the price was right even with shipping it from Texas. We already have a Ronald, Grimace, Hamburglar and Capt Crook and now the Big Mac. We still need (Did I say "need" OK how about "Want") a Mayor Mc Cheese and the Apple Pie tree so keep me in mind if you find one will you? Thanks Again for dropping by.

Free Clean

Vintage Mr Clean Sample Bottle givaway. I bet they didn't mail these out back then.

Chicken Planter

What do you do when your little tuna can is too small for your plant? Why save up some labels and mail away for a nice plaster version. When I found this piece I thought it was one of those plaster paint on your own projects from the ceramic store. I don't remember where but when I found out it was actually a premium I decided to keep it. I have not used it yet since the soil and water would probably disolve it after a few months. Thanks for dropping by and Have a great weekend.

Cards of War

A few weeks back I bought a collection of playing cards. I should say playing card since there was only 1 of each card in the lot. I guess collecting cards for the art on the back was popular in the past. I know my mother has a scrapbook filled with cards up in the rafters somewhere. This collection was divided into sets depending on the theme. Today I am posting what was in the war lot of cards. There is some great graphics on the cards and I plan on posting some more in the future. Have a great Day

Before the cardboard and plastic displays they use today they made them out of wood. This great CLIX razor blade piece is a great example. It is all painted wood with only the barber pole made out of plastic. The piece lights up and flashes to add even more appeal to the advertisement. The back has 3 other wood blade boxes that show different artwork. Each box alone is a work of art with all the detail, design and colo. I can see why these piece survived I would have had a hard time just tossing one out in the garbage myself.

Who are we?

Sometimes you come across a mystery figure (or two). I found these two and have kept them even though I had any idea what they were for or who they are. They have the letter "A" on both figures and there is some small copy and a copyright. So I figure since I have a regular audience here at the ranch I would post them and see if anyone has any info? So thanks for dropping by and maybe a mystery can be solved.

Bean Days

Everythings gets a day so why not the Soybean? In Clara City, Minnesota he had not one but three full days of celebration. I found a few of these buttons years ago and kept this one for my ad collection, I wonder if they had a giant Mr Soy Bean towering over the event ? Thanks for dropping by and have a great week.

Top Value Graphics

Some great 2 color illustrations from an old Top Value catalog I have. They were a stamp redemption store like Blue Chip or Green Stamps was. They had a Pink Plaid Elephant named Toppie as the ad character. Have a nice Sunday.

Pin marks the Spot

Mr Pinspotter the Robot spokesman for AMF Pinspotters Inc. In the 50's the Robots were going to handle all our work for us so many companies use the Mechanical Men as advertising characters. I got this great waterslide decal from Patrick who has the wonderful Vintage Disneyland "Stuff from the Park" Blog, check my links and give him a visit. Have a great weekend everyone and Thanks Patrick for the great decal.

Mmmmm Fritos

Nice little cardboard ad sign with The Fritos Kid in all his western glory.

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Sometimes all you have to do is add a face, body and appendages to your product and you pitchman is complete. Mr Contac is one such figure, he was made for the japan market a few years back. They had small ones like this guy which stood about 2 inches tall, some very small ones to hang off your cell phone and also some large ones which were about 11 inches tall. Some of them were offered as a premium and attached right on the product in the stores. The cool thing about these were the tiny contac medicine balls inside the capsule just like the real product. Thanks for stopping by today.

Too Kool

The Kool Penguin was used on all kinds of advertising from billboards to comics and on the packs themselves. They made a few great die-cut counter displays back in the 50's with Mr. Kool. This one has the dapper bird out for a walk with a beautiful bunch of flowers in his wing. The ones I have seen have no other slogans just Mr Kool in different situations with the logo on his chest. I guess everyone knew who he was and just his presence was enough to sell the product These days any sort of character for smokes is a crime so this little birdie would be hanging with Joe the Camel at the retirement home. Have a great Day everyone.

Talking Bovine

Here is a follow up to the Tickle me Pickle post. I came across a picture of the Talking Elsie the Cow display I was talking about so here it is. From what I remember about the description there was some sort of tape recorder inside the figure and a pressure sensitive floor mat attached to the player. When a person would pass by and step onto the mat Elsie would talk to them. I was once in the basement of a antique store and came across a large bust of Elsie from the waist up. The head was made of wooden supports for a thin rubber Elsie mask which fit over it plus there was a motor driven mouth for speaking. I would have loved to get it but one major problem was the rubber was almost all deteriorated so she looked more like a graveyard corpse than Elsie the Cow. That girl should have been put out to pasture! Good day ya all !!!!

Taco Sauce

Before those semi-handy hard to sometimes open packets of condiments Taco Rancho used these little containers for the stuff. This is made just like the old sour cream and cottage cheese tubs with the waxy coating on the outside, The one thing that is different is the size, it is only about 1 1/2 inches tall. I have a small version from Bob's Big Boy also in my collection. They were just another throw away container then so not many were saved. Thanks for dropping by today have a great week.

Space Cadet

One other small collection I have is Space themed greeting cards so I thought I would post one of them today.

Got Away

When collecting there is always a few things you wished you had gotten but did not. The price might be too high or you get outbid a the last moment or did not realize what it was till later. This octopus wall display is one I wished I had bid higher for when it was on Ebay probably 5 years ago. He is the mascot for the Octopus Car washes and some still have a giant 3 dimensional versions on poles above the place. This one was much smaller so it probably would have been used as a inside display. I have yet to see another one like it but hope one day to get another chance are one. Sorry for the late post today hope your Saturday is going great.

Tickle me Pickle

Tickle Tim the talking Pickle, say that one 3 times fast. Years before Ebay I had a postcard dealer that would send me whatever advertising cards they would come across in the mail ever so often. This must have been some sort of promo card but it has no information on the back. I have yet to see one of these out there and may never since these kind store displays were never meant to be sold plus they take up a lot of storage space. I have seen or heard of other speaking display figures like a Elsie the cow, The Fritos Kid at Casa De Fritos in Disneyland, The Squirt soda Boy and one of my all time favorites a giant Speedy Alka Seltzer. I wonder what Tickle Tim would say when you made him speak? Thanks for stopping by have a great Friday.

Flying Saucers

The only Disneyland photo I found in a old album a few weeks ago. What a fun time evveryone is having on the Flying Saucer ride. Check out the cool Daddy-O with his dark sunglasses. The picture is dated 2-26-66 on the back.I was luck this time to get this photo. Usually the sellers at the Junk Swap won't sell me just 1 picture. When I ask on the whole album I get some huge price so I have to leave it. This time he (for some unknown reason) sold me it for 3 bucks. Thanks go out to the nice swap meet vendor for todays tikiranch post.

Mighty Mallory

Just the kind of Superhero your engine ignition needs,
Might Mallory !
Great automotive ad figure found on a matchbook cover for today's post.
